Every morning, she wonders if she will get home safe.
Dear John,
I emailed you last week about the deepening crisis for women’s rights in Uganda. Today, I’m writing again—because the situation is urgent. Women’s safety is deteriorating rapidly, and feminist activists are risking their lives to protect them.
Can you stand with us against violence against women by donating now?
Our partner, Freedom and Roam Uganda (FARUG), is on the frontline, taking survivors of gender-based violence to hospital, delivering first aid kits, and navigating daily threats to do this life-saving work.
In 2023, Uganda passed The Anti-Homosexuality Act, which stigmatises and criminalises LGBTQI+ persons. The Act has resulted in witch hunts targeting the LGBTQI+ community and organisations like FARUG that work to support them.
Gloria Mutyaba, FARUG’s Programme Director, faces danger every day. Each morning, as she takes her child to daycare, men in the car park of her apartment block threaten her and block her way—in full view of others.
Each day, she asks herself one daunting question:
“How will I navigate this day and come back home safe?”
The violence is escalating, fuelled by the threat of further oppressive laws. FARUG is concerned the proposed Sexual Offences Bill would:
Weaken or remove protections against female genital mutilation (FGM)
Decriminalise non-consensual sex
Deny lesbian, bisexual, and queer (LBQ) women the right to love freely—especially those with disabilities
This is a terrifying step backward. It exposes the injustice of patriarchal laws that strip women of their rights, silence their voices, and leaves them vulnerable to attack.
But women in Uganda are standing strong.
With Womankind’s support, FARUG has launched a mobile clinic—a van providing first aid, medication, and emergency transport to survivors. It is dangerous work.
Threats come from everywhere—neighbours, strangers, even family members.
“Some women are in hiding, terrified for their lives,” Gloria says. “But others pretend to need help—just to lure us into danger.”
Every call for help is a risk. Every day is a battle for survival.
Your support will make a difference.
With more funding, we can ensure feminist organisations like FARUG have the resources to keep going—to keep women safe.
