President Donald Trump just nominated Project 2025 proponent Brian Nesvik to lead the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This is a worst-case scenario for our main wildlife agency, in charge of more than 1,600 of the United States’ endangered species and some 860 million acres of national wildlife refuges.

As director of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, Nesvik led one of the most anti-conservation agencies in the country. He regularly advocated for stripping protection from gray wolves and grizzly bears to let his hunting cronies pick them off as trophies.

Nesvik has proven he won’t lift a finger to prevent extinction — but he will push for the wanton killing of iconic animals. [link removed]

He faced national blowback in 2024 for his agency’s failure to take strong action against a man who captured a young wolf by running her down with a snowmobile. Instead of immediately putting the wounded creature out of her misery, the man posed with the suffering wolf — whose muzzle was taped shut — and paraded her around to be filmed and photographed. His punishment for that repugnant, cruel act? A $250 fine.

Nesvik’s lax response says everything about his contempt for wildlife — an attitude he will certainly bring to the Fish and Wildlife Service. If he’s confirmed Nesvik will wreak havoc on the Service, the Endangered Species Act, and our most cherished and vulnerable plants and animals.
