Dear Neighbors,

Some good news - following last week’s special election in Roseville, DFLer Rep. David Gottfried is now a member of the Minnesota House, reverting us back to a tie and ending GOP control. Before I dive into what that means for our work, I want to let you know about Saturday’s Town Hall I’ll be holding with Sen. Clark!

Town Hall

A huge shout out to the neighborhood organizations that are putting this together. We’ll be at the Eastside Food Co-op [ [link removed] ] in the Community Room, and we’re planning to get started at 2pm.

This’ll be a great opportunity to receive an update on our work at the State Capitol, and for you to ask any questions you may have!

I hope to see you there!

A Tied Minnesota House *

With the Minnesota House of Representatives finally back to the 67-67 tie, the power-sharing agreement that my DFL colleagues and I fought so hard to secure will now kick in. Had Democrats not denied quorum at the beginning of session, Republicans would have been able to control the House for two years rather than a few weeks.

Now, committees will have equal GOP and DFL membership, and gavels will alternate between GOP and DFL co-chairs. For me, that means assuming the role of DFL co-chair for the Education Policy Committee.

This also means that bills don’t only need bipartisan support to pass the House - as has always been the case this session - they now need bipartisan support to even pass committees. Ideally, this would mean that we’re spending less time on hyper-partisan bills that have no chance of passing the House, which has been the case too many times these last few weeks.

In their short time controlling the House, instead of putting forward common-ground solutions that benefit all Minnesotans, Republicans decided to spend precious time on bills to roll back our progress on preventing gun violence, attack reproductive rights, and threaten the health of working families by going after Paid Family & Medical Leave.

In the Education Policy Committee, we were the first stop for an especially gross piece of legislation that bullies trans kids and makes it more difficult for ALL girls to play sports. It passed that committee without any DFL support, but we managed to stop it on the House Floor.

I spoke to how hateful and harmful this bill is, which you can watch here:

Being tied means it’s now far more difficult for hateful bills like this to take up time on the House Floor. It’s time to focus on solutions that actually help Minnesotans.

Minnesota’s Budget Forecast

*Earlier this month, we received our latest forecast for Minnesota’s budget and economic future. While we still maintain a surplus, the chaos and cuts from the Trump Administration are only just beginning to impact Minnesota, and it’s putting our financial future in peril.

Trump's Economic Impact

We’ll do what we can in Minnesota to plan for the future, but it’s a task that would be made easier if our Republican colleagues rejected this notion that government only exists to cater to billionaires.

As we set our budget this year, I’ll be focusing my efforts on our community and working families throughout the state, not the wealthy and well-connected.
