Zenith accountability resolution passes!
[link removed]
John,
Last month we came to you with the exciting announcement that Portland residents and organizations sued the City ([link removed]) over Zenith Energy. The lawsuit challenges the City’s decision to allow the Texas-based fossil fuel company to expand its operations in Portland – and Breach is taking the lead on raising money to offset legal costs ([link removed]) . Zenith has now intervened in the lawsuit to defend the City’s decision.
In this fight to stop the construction of new fossil fuel and so-called “renewable fuel” infrastructure in our city, it is inexcusable that the Mayor and city administrators have sided with a fossil fuel company over the people of Portland. As we watch our federal government devolve into the greedy hands of oligarchs, we need our leaders to stand up against the fossil fuel industry, not with them.

Today, we have a new development to share with you.
Last night, the campaign to stop Zenith achieved a huge victory ([link removed]) . The new Portland City Council is taking our side and approved a Zenith accountability resolution ([link removed]) with a series of important directives related to the past, present, and future of Zenith’s operations in Portland. The resolution ([link removed]) requires the City of Portland to “take action to redress past harms, ensure accountability for past City actions, and to involve the public in major decisions affecting human and environmental health and safety.” This includes directives to:
* Disclose of all prior communications between the City and Zenith into the public record.
* Re-evaluate Zenith’s compliance with land use laws and potential discrepancies in Zenith’s 2022 Land Use Compatibility Statement (LUCS) application.
* Investigate Zenith’s compliance with its franchise agreement obligations.
* Urge the Auditor to investigate and report on the City’s handling of Zenith’s LUCS applications.
Portland City Councilors Mitch Green, Angelita Morillo, Jamie Dunphy, and Tiffany Koyama Lane co-sponsored the resolution. All City Councilors voted in favor except for Councilor Steve Novick, who voted against it.
The campaign against Zenith Energy has been a long road and we are grateful for your continued support as we attempt to end fossil fuels and fight for a just transition from every possible angle. Please make a tax-deductible donation ([link removed]) today to support our friends and partners who are bravely taking the Zenith fight into the courtroom.
In solidarity for a fossil free future in Portland and beyond,
The Breach Team
