[email protected] [email protected] LEGISLATIVE UPDATE FROM JODI SCHWARTZ, STATE COMMITTEEWOMAN Congratulations to all of the winners of last Tuesday’s Municipal Elections! Thank you to all the volunteers who worked so hard to make sure that Republicans had a good day!! There are run off elections on March 25th for Republican Phyllis Choy in Jupiter and the NPA who shares our values in Lake Worth, Anthony Segrich. If you are interested in volunteering to make sure that we win those seats, please contact Lynn Redmond. She is coordinating efforts for phone banking, sign waving, and other volunteer opportunities. Thank you in advance for your efforts! SAVE THE DATE: The next RPOF Quarterly is on May 16-17 in Orlando. If you are interested in attending and representing PBC, please reach out to myself, Joe LaFauci, or Carl Cascio. Tallahassee Update: Session is moving along and a lot is happening. The bills are going through committees, getting closer to being voted on by the full House and Senate. I am tracking many bills and attending many committee hearings while in Tallahassee. Some of the topics I am watching closely are DEI, Charter schools/Education, Elections/EI, Insurance, etc. I am also meeting with Representatives. Please reach out if you would like more information on specific issues/bills that you are personally interested in. You are always welcome to attend any meetings and speak in favor or against a bill in front of the committee. The Representatives and Senators love the support and discussions. There are also a lot of online resources to watch meetings or track the bills you are interested in. Please feel free to contact me and I can show you how to use those websites. Two of the bills that I am tracking: HB 1205 Initiative Petitions Proposing an Amendment to the State Constitution – General Bill – Representative Persons-Mulicka · Requires $1M bond to begin process of gathering petitions · Revises provisions relating to initiative petitions including handling petitions and signature verification process · This bill will make it a little more difficult to make changes to our State Constitution. · The bill was favorably reported in the Government Affairs committee and is now in the State Affairs Committee, its final committee stop. HB 751 and HB 749 - Representative Sapp · 751 for Police and 749 for Fire · Now the wording in legislation leaves out certain circumstances of injury for cops and firemen/women. New language includes performance in the line of duty or training exercises. · Andy Lahara was critically injured doing traffic control and can’t continue being a police officer, but the current law doesn’t allow for lifetime health insurance coverage for family. · 751 has been assigned to 3 committees but has not been agenda’d yet. · 759 has been reported favorably by Government Operations Subcommittee and is now in Budget Committee.
