Dear John,
As threatened, the Trump Administration said yesterday that it intends to begin dismantling the Department of Education with a new Executive Order.

Like you, I am outraged at the rhetoric surrounding this action. I was outraged when it was on the campaign trail and I'm even more outraged to see it put into action.

The Department of Education is an essential agency in American public education. The DOE enforces the civil rights of all students, regardless of their means, background, and ability.

Further, the DOE's offices include student aid, civil rights, and special education and rehabilitative services. It is the largest source of loans for college students and provides nearly 14% of funding for American public K-12 education.

With a promise to 'return the education authority to the states,' electing supportive, integrity-driven school boards has never been more critical.

We remain in close contact with our local and national partners as we navigate this new and untested realm. While only an act of Congress can formally close the department, gutting its staff and funding will severely impact students nationwide.

Together, we will fight with and for our students to ensure they are supported, protected, and allowed to thrive in schools where everyone belongs.

In solidarity,
Kyrstin Schuette
Founder and Executive Director
