Last Tuesday, I voted against the bad Republican spending bill that ended up clearing the Senate. Let me tell you why:

This bill defunds our cops, takes away promised money for my fellow toxic-exposed veterans, cuts NIH funding, and more—all while Republicans keep pushing tax giveaways for the rich and powerful. It’s a garbage deal for the American people.

Look, I’m a guy who believes in finding common ground when we can—but when extremists come for our communities, our democracy, and our rights, you stand your ground and fight.

And make no mistake: the threats we’re facing are real. Trump and his MAGA allies are gutting protections for workers, veterans, and so many Americans. Billionaires like Elon Musk are rigging the system against you. And Republicans in Congress are doing everything they can to take more power for the few at the expense of everyone else.

This is not a moment for our leaders to back down. It’s a moment for our leaders to stand strong.

We are not in normal times in Washington. I believe that we are in a moment of great risk to this country.

We’ve seen pretty brazen attacks on the rule of law. And these are not small, simple, partisan disputes. I think a lot of this goes to the heart of what our Constitution means.

People want leaders who will stand their ground when Trump and his allies try to dismantle our rights, strip away our benefits, and tear at the very fabric of our country.

I swore an oath to defend the Constitution when I served in the Navy, and I took that same oath when I joined Congress. That duty means standing up for our democracy, for our freedoms, and for our future.

So when our democracy is under attack, when hardworking people are being thrown aside in favor of the wealthy and well-connected, I won’t hesitate—I’ll be the first to step up and fight.
