Hi John!
New York is making progress in reducing gun violence β but we need sustained investment to keep saving lives .
A new bill, S1289 , would establish a permanent Office of Gun Violence Prevention under the Division of Criminal Justice Services. This means long-term funding for Community Violence Intervention (CVI) programs β proven strategies that stop violence before it happens.
π Gun violence is already decreasing in New York:
β
375 homicides recorded in NYC in 2024 β a 3.8% decrease from 2023
β
Shooting incidents in Upstate NY cities dropped by 28% in the first eight months of 2024
β
Gun-related deaths statewide were 4.7 per 100,000 people in 2023
But without permanent funding, CVI programs wonβt have the resources they need to keep communities safe.
