New York is making progress in reducing gun violence — but we need sustained investment to keep saving lives .
A new bill, S1289 , would establish a permanent Office of Gun Violence Prevention under the Division of Criminal Justice Services. This means long-term funding for Community Violence Intervention (CVI) programs — proven strategies that stop violence before it happens.
📉 Gun violence is already decreasing in New York:
✅ 375 homicides recorded in NYC in 2024 — a 3.8% decrease from 2023
✅ Shooting incidents in Upstate NY cities dropped by 28% in the first eight months of 2024
✅ Gun-related deaths statewide were 4.7 per 100,000 people in 2023
But without permanent funding, CVI programs won’t have the resources they need to keep communities safe.
