March 20, 2025, marks two months since Donald Trump's inauguration. Since taking office, the US president has led a series of unprecedented attacks on press freedom. In particular, he has signed decrees limiting access to information, he has pushed for restrictive measures against journalists, and has even frozen billions of dollars intended for independent media aid projects around the world. On Saturday, March 15, the alarming decision to place all Voice of America (VOA) personnel on administrative leave marked a turning point in the US’ role as a champion of press freedom.
VOA is the largest and oldest international American broadcaster. This media outlet produces content in 47 languages for audiences outside of the United States. By suspending VOA, Donald Trump is attacking freedom of the press on an international level.
