In celebration of Women’s History Month, City Council and Mayor Todd Gloria honored ten women with this year’s citywide “Woman of Distinction” award for their leadership, accomplishments, and service to San Diego. I was proud to honor Cori Austin, CEO of Center for Community Solutions, as District 1’s Woman of Distinction. For over 20 years, Cori has been a tireless advocate for survivors of relationship and sexual violence, leading life-saving programs that provide safety, healing, and hope. She helped develop a county-wide response to family homelessness and served on the San Diego County Domestic Violence Council, shaping policies to protect the most vulnerable. Her leadership continues to drive real change for a safer, more compassionate San Diego.

THE POWER OF THE FLOWER

March Madness? More like Bloom Bracket! 💐 Voting is now open to pick a native bloom for San Diego’s official city flower. The Your City, Your Flower initiative is a community-driven project to replace the carnation with a native flower that truly reflects San Diego’s natural beauty.

RESTORING NESTING GROUNDS

As a fellow birder, it’s always rewarding to join volunteers and the San Diego Bird Alliance for their Annual Least Tern Habitat Restoration event—now in its 13th year! Did you know? San Diego County hosts 60% of the California Least Tern nesting population and removing invasive plants from their nesting grounds helps provide a safer home for this endangered species. If you enjoy Mariner’s Point, please stay clear of this unique reserve established in 1974.

JOIN: COMMISSION ON POLICE PRACTICES

Applications for the Commission on Police Practices are now open for the following categories: At Large; Districts 3, 5, and 7; Low-and-Moderate Income; and Youth. The independent Commission on Police Practices aims to increase community trust in law enforcement through unbiased evaluation, accountability, and transparency for the betterment and safety of both the community and law enforcement. Please submit by Friday, April 11, 2025, at 5:00 PM for consideration. For any questions, email [email protected].

CIVICALLY ENGAGED STUDENTS

Team LaCava hosted Francis Parker School student Katie for a week of shadowing with our La Jolla Community Representative, Emily. During her time with us, Katie gained first-hand experience in the daily responsibilities of a San Diego City Council staffer—from meeting preparation and constituent communication to understanding the vital role local government plays in our communities. Thank you, Katie, for your enthusiasm and dedication to civic engagement—we can’t wait to see where your passion for public service takes you!
