Dear John,

Much has been said in recent days about the government’s proposals to cut benefits to some of the most vulnerable people in society…most of it far from positive.

Those proposals have prompted a significant backlash, from the public, Labour backbenchers and, it seems, some on the front bench too. And, while it remains to be seen whether this response causes them to change their plans, one thing is already clear: their actions have further undermined public trust in politics.
