John xxxxxx, did you hear about what’s happening in Texas?
As the 2025 news cycle continues to share relentlessly disturbing updates, we wanted to make sure you saw the most recent news out of Texas.
This week, the husband of Porsha Ngumezi spoke out about his state’s abortion ban and blamed it for the tragic and needless death of his wife. Late last year, Porsha Ngumezi went to the hospital for a miscarriage when she was 11 weeks pregnant. Due to the state’s abortion ban, doctors refused to provide her with the care she needed. Despite their patient's excessive bleeding, doctors were hesitant to perform the necessary, and otherwise completely standard, surgical procedure. They cited fear of ramifications by the state. Ngumezi eventually went into cardiac arrest and died.
We are horrified and saddened by this story, which, unfortunately, is likely to continue happening in Texas and so many other abortion ban states. As reported by the Gender Equity Policy Institute, after Texas outlawed abortion, the maternal mortality rate in the state increased by 56%.
Texas’s abortion laws were written and passed by rooms full of men. This is why Her Bold Move Texas is working to elect women across Texas to chip away at the GOP, male supermajorities in their state. Help us remove these anti-choice, anti-woman men from powerful positions in Texas by rushing $20.25 or more to Her Bold Move Texas today → |
Texas Governor Greg Abbott surrounded by powerful Texas men and 0 women at a, now infamous, bill signing ceremony in which he told press his state's abortion ban, "provides at least six weeks for a person to be able to get an abortion.” A preposterous claim considering many women don't yet know they are pregnant at that stage of their pregnancy.
Also this week in Texas, a midwife has been arrested and charged for her involvement in facilitating abortions. This is the first time a provider has been criminally charged since the state's draconian near-total abortion ban went into effect in 2022.
As a reminder, this abortion ban was championed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, and their majority-male state legislature. It is illegal to perform an abortion (including D&C surgeries) with limited exceptions. As we’ve seen, even the alleged exceptions for “life of the mother” are not holding up in practice.
According to NBC News, the abortion charge is considered a second-degree felony, with a sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. This is a first-of-its-kind law that targets providers, not patients – and will lead to even more deaths unless something changes soon. At Her Bold Move, we know the best defense against this deadly law will be to elect more women to Texas’s government.
This is clear: We need to make change in Texas, and that starts with getting pro-choice women into the rooms where decisions are being made. Help us chip away at the male-dominated, anti-choice institutions in Texas by donating $20.25 or more to Her Bold Move Texas today →

Her Bold Move is the fastest-growing support network for women running for office in the United States. Since our founding in 2020, we have supported hundreds of pro-choice, pro-women women candidates across 42 states and counting. As abortion bans and other dangerous laws about women tend to get passed in states with the lowest representation numbers for women in government (4%, 11%, 12%....) we've made it our mission to break the anti-choice male supermajorities in those state legislatures.
