Maine Conservation Voters

Dear John,

We write to you today with heavy hearts, sadness, and anger about the murder of George Floyd by a White Minneapolis police officer and his fellow officers that stood by and were complicit. We condemn his murder, and the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Freddie Gray, Laquan McDonald, Philando Castile, and countless other Black lives lost to racial violence.

We are joining with our partners in Maine’s conservation movement to call for accountability for the police officers who have taken these lives, for those who have allowed these lives to be taken, and for a reform of a law enforcement system that allows for the dehumanization and devaluation of Black life. We stand in solidarity with the protesters who are putting their health and safety on the lines during a pandemic to call for justice and accountability.

Until we address the underlying causes of systemic racism and the resulting privilege granted to White people in America, inequality and crimes based in racial fear and hate will continue. Here at MCV, based in one of the whitest states in the nation and as an organization led and staffed predominately by White people, we recognize our shortcomings and our privilege.

We must demand action from ourselves, each other, and our elected leaders. This year, we’ll be working to ensure that everyone has access to the ballot box, because ultimately those in charge, those who promote and condone racism, violence and hate through action and inaction must be held accountable.

If you'd like to make a contribution to organizations working on the frontlines or fighting to end injustice, here are a couple of suggestions:

In Solidarity,

Maureen, Beth, Kathleen, Abigail, Will, Rani, Greta, and Gina
