Hi John,
Israel has shattered the ceasefire in Gaza with devastating effects, killing hundreds of people with air strikes and launching a new ground offensive. Chillingly, its prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that this latest round of bombing would be “only the beginning”. Following two weeks in which Israel had already blocked all humanitarian aid into Gaza, it is clear that Israel believes it can continue to act with total impunity.(1)

It is not hard to see why. The US government reportedly gave its approval for this latest massacre and leaders in countries like the UK have been incapable of condemning Israel for its breaches of international law. As Israel resumes its genocidal attacks on Gaza, we must force a change – that's why we’re escalating our call for trade sanctions on Israel.(2)

The UK government must work with any countries ready to stand up for international law by suspending agreements that offer privileged trading terms to Israel, banning trade and investment in Israel’s illegal settlements, and imposing measures against firms involved in the attacks on Gaza or in Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory.

Will you write to the government and demand trade sanctions to prevent Israel’s war crimes?
Yes, it’s time for sanctions on Israel ([link removed])
Trade is an area where the UK could have significant leverage over Israel. The UK is Israel’s fifth most important trade partner, but Israel is only a relatively minor export market for the UK. The measures we are calling for would have a material impact on Israel’s war economy and target industries that are directly involved in the illegal occupation.(3)

The International Court of Justice has also been clear: countries must make sure that they do not aid or assist Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian land. The UK's current trade relations with Israel support firms that operate on stolen land, while the government’s plans for a new trade deal help to whitewash Israel’s war crimes. These measures should be seen as a necessary corrective to a trade policy which currently assists Israel’s abuses.(4)

Economic pressure has been an important tool used against repressive regimes previously and history will be on the side of any state that takes action now. In the 1980s, international sanctions against South Africa helped bring down its apartheid regime, with the UK banning trade with significant parts of its economy. To put pressure on Israel, we must demand such action now.(5)

Can you add your name to our call?
Demand the UK puts sanctions on Israel ([link removed])
With Israel's leaders threatening even more violence, there must be sustained, meaningful pressure from outside. Together with campaigners in other countries, it is time to push urgently for trade sanctions to stop Israel’s war crimes.

Thank you for your support,
