Dear John,
In recent weeks, we have seen heightened threats to our cherished public lands. From the abrupt layoffs of National Park Service employees to the freezing of critical federal funding, rapid shifts in policy have destabilized the agencies that safeguard our parks and redwood forests.
In this time of uncertainty, one thing is clear: It’s time to speak up for America’s public lands, including our treasured redwood forests. Your voice is more important than ever, and together we have the power to stand up for these irreplaceable places.
Here are key threats to our parks and forests—and ways you can help us push back.
Pressing threats to our public lands:
- Federal layoffs: A chaotic wave of job cuts at the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, and U.S. Forest Service threatens public safety and visitor services, wildfire management, and forest protection. We stand in solidarity with the dedicated workers and trusted partners who manage and protect public lands for all.
- Funding freezes: Uncertainty around federal funding, including grants for restoration, research, and outdoor access, has stalled critical conservation efforts. The League calls for the lawful release of federal funds previously authorized by Congress. Without this funding, the forests will suffer.
- Executive orders: Recent executive orders on timber production and timber imports call for increased commercial logging on public lands. This puts irreplaceable old-growth forests at risk, including those near California’s redwoods. The League is vigilantly monitoring this threat and stands ready to ensure that the forest remains protected.
How you can help:
- Raise your voice: Call or email your representatives in Congress and leaders at the Department of the Interior to demand stronger protections for public lands. Your voice matters, whether you live within the redwood range or in any state in the nation.
Find your representatives or contact the Secretary of the Interior: (202) 208-3100 x 3.

- Lend your support: Donate to organizations that are fighting to protect redwood forests and other public lands from destructive policies. Your contributions empower us to defend parks, forests, and wildlife in this critical moment.
- Spread the word: Share these critical issues on social media with #ProtectPublicLands. Engage with your elected officials online. Talk to your friends and family. Keep sharing stories of laid-off NPS workers and other federal employees to show widespread support for these dedicated professionals who protect our lands and waters.
You are part of a powerful movement. Every person who speaks up adds to the chorus of concerned Americans demanding protections for our parks and public lands. The growing outcry is breaking through and momentum is building. Let’s keep pushing forward—together!
By speaking up today, you are standing up for the tomorrow that we all deserve.
In gratitude,
Ben Friedman
