Since Donald Trump took the oath of office just under two months ago, we’ve effectively been in an illegal government shutdown.
Elon Musk — unhinged, unconfirmed, untethered — has single-handedly gutted federal agencies like the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, USAID, and soon, the Department of Education.
He’s canceled government grants and contracts and cut Congressionally-approved funding to projects here in the 6th District, among many, many others.
Local mayors, community leaders, non-profit workers, and small businesses owners have told me that federal funding promised to them has been revoked.
Folks, I don’t use the term “purge” lightly ...but how else can we describe the systematic removal of nonpartisan public servants under the guise of rooting out fake “corruption”?
If you know or are a federal employee who’s been terminated under the Trump/Musk Administration, here are some resources:
* Civil Service Strong [[link removed]] , a nonprofit organization offering resources, support, information, and advocacy for civil servants.
* Alden Law Group , a national employment law firm preparing a formal complaint to the Office of Special Counsel regarding probationary terminations. If you were a probationary employee that was terminated, you can help by filling out their Data Call form [[link removed]] .
No two ways about it: This disaster in the making is proof that Trump doesn’t, and in fact never did, care about the people who elected him. Sadly, those communities — farmers, miners, union workers, seniors, veterans, and so many others — will pay the dearest price.
A note to America’s 2.2 million federal workers:
You didn’t get into public service for money, perks, or glory. You’re here because you believe in America, you’re committed to making America work, you’re committed to making it better.
Civil servants form the backbone of our democracy. You deserve leaders who understand that.
Yours,
Sean Casten
