** Here's how to watch the important Prop. 13 hearing in the state Assembly on Thursday
------------------------------------------------------------

The special interest groups that seek to dismantle Proposition 13 have qualified the “split roll” initiative for the November ballot. This is the proposal that strips Prop. 13’s protection away from business properties.

The Legislature is calling it, “Initiative Constitutional Amendment to Increase Funding for Public Schools, Community Colleges, and Local Government Services by Changing Tax Assessment of Commercial and Industrial Property.” Don’t let that fool you. This is an initiative that directly attacks Proposition 13 in a never-ending effort to raise taxes. This time, it’s on businesses. We know who’s next.

On Thursday, HJTA President Jon Coupal will testify before the state Assembly at an informational hearing about this measure. You can watch the hearing online or listen to the audio on your computer, tablet or smartphone. Here’s the information on how and when to tune in:

Date: Thursday, June 4, 2020

Time: 1:30 p.m.

If you would like to submit a public comment, you may email the committee before the hearing begins at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) . Help us spread the word that California taxpayers support Proposition 13 with no changes to it.

Here’s some important information about the initiative process: The proponents of qualified initiatives may choose to withdraw them from the November ballot, if they do so by June 25. Why would they do that? It is technically possible for the Legislature to approve a different tax increase proposal, which would need a two-thirds vote in both the Assembly and in the state Senate to get on the November ballot. It’s also possible that the special interests behind the split-roll initiative would choose to support a brand-new proposal and agree to withdraw their initiative.

Will that happen? We don’t know, but we’re watching closely. Your Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association will always fight to protect Proposition 13 and taxpayers.

If you would like to contact your representatives about Proposition 13 or any other issue, you can find their names and contact information at [link removed] or in the government pages of your local phone book.

There has never been a more important time to be an activist for taxpayer rights and protections. Thank you for your support. We greatly appreciate you.

Gratefully,
Jon
