John,

Across the country, people have banded together to protest against the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless others. My heart goes out to their loved ones and to the black communities around the nation reliving the trauma of violence and systemic racism.

Racial inequality is not new. The outrage and protests unleashed across the nation last weekend were not sparked solely by police brutality. Institutional racism exists throughout our society, our economy, and our laws -- from our criminal justice system to our educational institutions to our public health infrastructure.

It’s time for elected leaders in Kansas to acknowledge that we have failed to give this problem the attention it deserves. We can do better and we must do better - starting right now.

We can no longer suppress or ignore those who are suffering and have asked for our help. We need to be better allies. We need to listen to the voices of those in marginalized communities. We need to speak out against injustice. And we need to actively address the roots of these issues across our state. Only then we will live in a world where everyone is truly equal.

My pledge to every Kansan, especially black Kansans, is to continue the fight and not allow these protests to fade with the next news cycle. We’re going to confront these painful issues. And finally we’re going to take action as if lives depend on it -- because they do.

Together, we can end this fight and create a better future for our children,

Thank you,

Laura
