The LAPD said around 11 p.m. a white Infiniti was driving at a high rate of speed going northbound on Crenshaw Boulevard near Rodeo Place. Police said the driver of the vehicle lost control before going off the road and colliding with a building. The driver fled the scene in another white sedan. The LAPD said a 4-year-old boy was in the vehicle at the time of the crash. He was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Two other passengers, one of them the boy's mother, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. No arrests have been made. Police are continuing to look for the driver and are asking anyone who may have information to contact police. CBS 2 LAPD shares image of suspected killer in Westlake stabbing The Los Angeles Police Department has released an image of the man who allegedly stabbed a 24-year-old man to death near MacArthur Park last year. On Aug. 6, 2024, Joey Darnell Thomas of Long Beach was fatally stabbed near the intersection of Westlake Avenue and 6th Street, police said. While the motive remains unknown, police on Tuesday released a short video of the suspected killer, and investigators are asking anyone with information to come forward. A reward of up to $50,000 is available for information leading to the killer’s apprehension. KTLA 5 Man stabbed in upper body at Universal City Metro station A man was stabbed in the upper body at the Universal/ Studio City Metro station Tuesday evening. The incident was reported at around 8:15 p.m. at the Metro station located on Lankershim Boulevard. The Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene and located a male stabbing victim. AIR7 was over the scene when paramedics loaded the victim into the ambulance. His condition was unknown. It is not clear what sparked the sudden violence, but eyewitnesses said a man was seen running from the area. Police officers quickly swarmed the area, but were unable to locate a suspect. No further details were immediately available. ABC 7 DOJ to announce arrests in connection with South LA Rollin' 60s Neighborhood Crips Authorities plan to announce arrests and court filings Wednesday morning related to a long-time leader of a street gang in South Los Angeles. The arrest are in connection with the Rollin' 60s Neighborhood Crips, according to a news release from the U.S Attorney's Office in Los Angeles. The news conference is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Details about the arrests and court filings were not immediately available. NBC 4 Parole violation suspect crashes moments after LAPD called off pursuit in Northridge Moments after the Los Angeles Police Department ended a brief pursuit in the San Fernando Valley, the suspect collided with other vehicles and left innocent people hurt in Northridge. Officers ended the pursuit because the suspect was traveling at speeds of over 100 mph during the chase. On Tuesday morning, officers with the Los Angeles Police Department were in pursuit of a parole violation suspect. The pursuit started at 7 a.m. near Gresham Street and Darby Avenue. At some point, officers called off the pursuit after they deemed it was too dangerous. Around 7:11 a.m., the suspect collided with other vehicles at Balboa Boulevard and Nordhoff Street. The LAPD said the suspect tried to make a run for it. However, officers caught up with him and he was subsequently taken into custody. Two people were taken to the hospital. FOX 11 ‘Dangerous’ drug trafficking ring shut down in Southern California 16 people from Southern California are facing charges related to the distribution of drugs coordinated by a group based out of Escondido. A news release from the U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday states that two federal indictments were unsealed, which detail part of how the suspects allegedly ran the operation. According to the DOJ, more than 150 agents from federal, state and local agencies served search warrants in Escondido, San Diego, Orange County and Roanoke, Virginia on Tuesday morning. “This case is a direct hit against a dangerous drug trafficking network that has been flooding our communities with deadly narcotics,” reads part of a statement from Special Agent in Charge of HSI San Diego Shawn Gibson. The release states that during the 16-month investigation, officials seized more than 4 lbs. of fentanyl, more than 116 lbs. of methamphetamine, amounts of cocaine and Adderall, nine firearms and ammunition, and body armor. According to the DOJ, two of the defendants allegedly had “leadership roles” in the trafficking operation and coordinated the distribution of meth and fentanyl. KTLA 5 California deputy killed, cruiser torn in half in crash during pursuit A San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy was killed after his patrol car crashed into another vehicle and struck a light pole during a pursuit, ABC News reported. The pursuit began around 11 a.m. on March 17 when deputies attempted to stop a suspected stolen vehicle in Victorville, according to the report. The driver had failed to yield, prompting a pursuit. Deputy Hector Cuevas Jr., a six-year law enforcement veteran, crashed near El Evado and Seneca roads, colliding with a bystander’s car before hitting a light pole. The impact split his vehicle in half, according to the report. Cuevas died at the scene, while the other driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver continued fleeing before stopping and attempting to escape on foot. He was quickly apprehended and later booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and evading a peace officer causing death or serious injury, according to the report. Sheriff Shannon Dicus described Cuevas as a dedicated officer and father. “He was a grand and great protector,” Dicus said. PoliceOne ‘Do better’: Man arrested more than a dozen times since Jan. attempts to strangle N.Y. officer A man with more than a dozen arrests within the first few months of 2025is back in custody after allegedly trying to strangle a police officer, News 12 Westchester reported. The man, who has had over 25 interactions with law enforcement since January, now faces multiple felony charges and is being held in the Orange County Jail, according to the report. “During that time, [he] has spit on a nurse practitioner inside of the hospital, assaulted a fellow patient at a mental health treatment center and now he has injured a police officer,” Middletown Police Department Lt. Jeffry R. Thoelen stated in a news release. The officer involved is expected to fully recover. Middletown police said the man has been receiving outpatient mental health treatment through state and county programs, but no decisive action has been taken to prevent further incidents. “The cycle continued without any recourse or long-term solution, and our police department was left to navigate the extremely frustrating reality that bail reform and a lack of appropriate mental health care have exposed our local community to completely unnecessary risks,” the news release stated. PoliceOne Public Safety News Soldering Operation Sparks Fire at Home in Mar Vista Firefighters knocked down a fire Tuesday ignited by a sweat soldering operation at a two-story home in Mar Vista, authorities said. Firefighters dispatched at 12:20 p.m. Tuesday to 3700 S. Ocean View Ave. had the fire out within 21 minutes of their arrival, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported. The sweat solder operation in a room remodel produced fire in a wall, which then extended to the attic and roof of the two-story residence, the fire department said. All occupants were out and no injuries were reported. Westside Current Attic Fire in Mid City Knocked Down An attic fire in a single-story residence in Mid City was knocked down in the early hours Wednesday, authorities said. The fire was reported around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, in the 2800 block of South Bedford Street by the Santa Monica (10) Freeway, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Three dozen firefighters knocked down the flames in about half hour, confining it to the attic with wood shake roof that supported a faster surface spread, the department stated. No injuries were reported. MyNewsLA Local Government News LA Council to Consider 2-Year Budget Process Amid Fiscal Concerns The Los Angeles City Council Tuesday will consider a motion to transition to a two-year budget cycle, which could alleviate fiscal concerns caused by lower than anticipated revenue, overspending, and increasing wildfire recovery costs. Council members Eunisses Hernandez, Bob Blumenfield and Imelda Padilla introduced a motion June 2024 calling for a report on the potential impacts of switching to a biennial budget cycle. Relevant departments would also provide a proposed timeline with due dates and ways to bolster public participation. By moving to a two-year budget, the council members aim to address existing barriers to public participation on the city's spending plan. "...These adjustments will ensure a more inclusive and harmonious budget system," the motion reads. According to the council members, the current budget cycles "does not allow for adequate time for the council to thoroughly review the proposed budget or the public sufficient opportunities to engage in the budget process." Westside Current LA Council Ask for Official Report on House Sharing Ordinance The Los Angeles City Council directed staff Tuesday to explore proposals to improve enforcement of its home-sharing ordinance and residential hotel policies. In a 12-0 vote, the City Council members instructed relevant departments to report on the personnel and funding needed to enforce regulations against illegal, unregistered home-sharing activity. Council members Bob Blumenfield, John Lee and Monica Rodriguez were absent during the vote. Additionally, staff will explore establishing a private right of action, which could allow residents to pursue lawsuits against homeowners, who offer their property as short-term rentals and violate the city’s regulations. In 2021, Councilwoman Nithya Raman introduced a motion seeking to address issues with enforcement of the city’s ordinance. It was backed by Councilman Bob Blumenfield and former members Mike Bonin, Paul Koretz and Kevin de Leon.
