As Africa’s cities rapidly expand, their water supplies are shrinking. Urban sprawl and increased farming are degrading landscapes that are critical to sustaining and filtering fresh water. At the same time, clearing natural landscapes heightens the risk of dangerous floods. Nature offers solutions. Groups in Rwanda, Ethiopia and South Africa are working with WRI and partners to re-green their cities and the surrounding lands. Their efforts are helping to revitalize local rivers and protect water supplies, all while boosting local livelihoods. |
