Friend,

We have much more to do to root out systemic racial inequality

In Washington state and across the country, people are expressing pain and anger from generations of systemic racism.

The murders of George Floyd in Minnesota, Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia, and countless others are horrific. Their lives mattered. Black lives matter.

I applaud every Washingtonian and American standing for justice and equality. Over the past few days, we've seen hundreds of thousands of people peaceably exercise their First Amendment right, challenging all of us to lift our sights and to reduce inequity in our society. We cannot and will not allow that important message to be obscured by the destructive actions of a few.

Earlier this week, President Trump had law enforcement use tear gas on peaceful protestors so he could have a photo op, and he also threatened to deploy military action. He called for violent actions against Americans expressing their First Amendment right to protest.

He has repeatedly proven he is incapable of governing. He has shown nothing but false bravado throughout the chaos that has accompanied his time in office. Our country is defined by our collective character and democratic ideals, not by reactionary calls for division and not by threatening Americans with their own military.

We have much more to do to root out systemic inequality in our society. While we continue to prevent and confront the deaths of Black people by law enforcement, we must also address inequities for Black Americans in education, in healthcare, in housing, and in the reaction to COVID-19.

I hope in the days to come we all think of ways to do that. I'm committed -- I hope you are, too.

One of the ways to show that commitment is supporting the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Every donation funds the fight toward winning landmark legal battles, protecting Black voters across the nation, and advancing the cause of racial justice, equality, and an inclusive society.

If you can, make a donation to support the NAACP Legal Defense Fund right now -- in fact, make it monthly.

It's dependent on those of us who can step up to step up in a big way right now. To make a real difference, we have to do more than talk -- we have to act. Thanks for joining me to do that.

Very truly yours,

Jay
