Dear John,
This week, an exciting new development took place in Maryland when a distinguished group of lawyers gathered to discuss the creation of an LDAD chapter in that state. We are grateful for the outpouring of support and interest in our work, and we look forward to our combined efforts to unite in defense of the norms and principles of democracy. We will have much more to share about this endeavor in the future.
The recent executive orders and threatened investigations against many of the nation's top law firms must be understood as an effort to punish the targeted firms and cower the legal profession. These actions have created an inflection point for lawyers: will they choose silence, or will they respond in defense of democracy, the Constitution, and the rule of law? Amherst College Professor Austin Sarat and LDAD executive director Lauren Stiller Rikleen wrote about these threats to the profession in The Hill: The law must not bend to Trump’s crusade of political retribution.
We are delighted to invite you to join an upcoming webinar hosted by the University of Amsterdam School of Law, entitled: The Resilient Government Lawyer in the US and the EU: Dilemmas and Strategies. This roundtable features Professor Scott Cummings (UCLA), Kutsal Yesilkagit (University Leiden), and LDAD Executive Director Lauren Stiller Rikleen. A detailed description of the program can be found here.
