There are many ways for a democracy to descend into autocracy. We have historical and present day examples of countries all over the world losing their democracy, sometimes violently—but sometimes willingly as well.

The common thread in every story is that cowardice allowed the dictators to take over. Whether the elites were too cowardly to risk their finances and social status, or the common folk were too cowardly to stand up for their neighbors—cowardice is what kills democracies.

Today, America is filled with cowardly politicians.

The Republican Party had half a dozen opportunities to jettison Donald Trump and his movement since he came down that escalator in 2015. They have never had the courage to do it because Donald Trump helps them get what they want—power.

Those cowards have used Trump’s strength with the Republican base to win elections and support everything Trump does in public, while privately giving quotes to reporters that they secretly think he is a downright disaster—which he is.

Those Republicans do not change their ways because they do not suffer political repercussions for supporting Trump. This is the year we change that.

Let’s be clear, Republicans are not the only politicians capable of cowardice. We see it on the Democratic side as well. And like we said, cowardice is the path to autocracy.

We cannot and will not have a weak kneed opposition to Trump. So Democrats had better put their big boy pants on and be ready to fight Donald Trump and his corrupt, illegal, and autocratic agenda every single day.
