Dear John,
Last year marked the 50th anniversary of the federal Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act, a landmark piece of legislation that set minimum standards for the care of youth in juvenile justice systems.
Part of that law requires the federal Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention to issue recommendations to Congress and the White House [[link removed]] to create safer communities and empower youth to lead productive lives. In December 2024, OJJDP Administrator Liz Ryan released that report along with an Independent Practitioner Report [[link removed]] on Youth Justice that showed additional opportunities for reform. Together, the reports show the many opportunities to meet the needs of youth and families through a Continuum of Care model, a vision that provides a variety of diversion strategies and community-based interventions that prevent our children and adolescents from becoming more deeply involved in the formal justice system.
These reports show that despite major improvements since the passage of the JJDPA, there is much work to be done and that there is a path to get there.
