Email from Climate Leadership Council Colleagues, I’m pleased to share our latest report, America’s Carbon Advantage – 2025. This report affirms that the U.S. continues to lead the world in carbon-efficient manufacturing. It also reinforces a simple but powerful climate reality: where something is made matters. As you know, the Council released its original, groundbreaking "America's Carbon Advantage" study in 2020. This updated analysis highlights how the U.S. has developed its competitive edge over the last 20 years: greater energy efficiency, an increasingly diversified and lower-emitting electricity mix, and a shift in direct industrial energy usage. Key Findings: The U.S. maintains a carbon advantage over major economies. The U.S. is more than 2X more carbon-efficient than the world average. The U.S. carbon advantage is driven by fundamental differences in its energy efficiency, electricity mix, and direct industrial energy use. The U.S. has improved its carbon efficiency dramatically over the last two decades in comparison to other major economies. The second largest manufacturer in the world (U.S.) is about 4X more carbon-efficient than the largest (China). Emerging and developing economies are growing rapidly with a continued reliance on high-emitting energy sources. This advantage will persist in the years and decades ahead, so long as U.S. manufacturers maintain their commitment to innovation and global leadership. A trade system that accounts for carbon intensity differences would give American manufacturers a competitive boost, hold high-emission producers accountable, and can be an important tool to drive down global emissions.
