Dear Jack,
The Mississippi House just passed a bill to allow public to public School Choice (HB1435). Not far behind is a bill that would allow a form of public to private School Choice (HB1433).
Then the Senate went and passed a bill that has the potential to stamp out Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) ideology in our public universities (SB2515).

MCPP allies are running this hard hitting TV ad in favor of change ….
A few days before, the House passed a proposal to eliminate the income tax (HB1). They even passed a bill that would repeal a lot of the red tape that has been restricting the healthcare economy in our state (HB922).
To be clear, each of these important reforms still need to pass both chambers before heading to the Governor’s desk.
That said, it is hard to think of a year in the past couple of decades when, at this stage of Mississippi’s legislative session there was a realistic chance of passing this amount of real conservative policy.
For as long as anyone can remember, Mississippi has been thought of as 50^th out of 50 states. It might be time to think again.
Governor Tate Reeves keeps pointing out how Mississippi has momentum. Indeed, in two quarters of last year, our state had one of the fastest growing per person incomes and per person outputs of any US state.
Yes, you read that right. Mississippi was one of the fastest growing states in America.
‘Mississippi Momentum’ has become a thing ….
Mississippi’s new found growth might still be more of a snapshot than a trend. But if our legislature really does pass all of the measures listed above, our state really will be on a new upward trajectory.
Even as you read this, an army of lobbyists is frantically trying to undo these proposed changes. The absurdly named “Parent’s Campaign” has gone into overdrive to try to prevent giving actual parents more choice. Scare stories abound. Those that Tate Reeves calls the “coalition of the status quo” are trying desperately to keep things the way they are.
There will be no shortage of pundits and commentators making the fatuous argument that the Mississippi state legislature somehow only has the bandwidth for one reform at a time, as though voting through the proposal to eliminate the income tax somehow makes it impossible to approve proposals that improve our education, too.
Good conservative leaders and lawmakers need to hold their nerve. Face down the lobbyists and vested interests that don’t want change.
Ignore the smug, self-satisfied anti school choice activists that sent their own kids to private school.
Our lawmakers can vote for these changes in the knowledge that we have a President and a primary base behind them all the way!
Have an awesome weekend!
