Hello
Neighbor,

With the first month of the year already over, we’re one step closer to the end of winter and the start of spring! But before the snow melts and the ice thaws for the year, make sure you don’t miss out on the beauty and fun of a pure Michigan winter — from ice skating and fishing to snowboarding and tubing, there’s no shortage of frozen fun to be had!

Our work in the Legislature is well underway for the year, and I’m honored to continue serving you and our community in the Senate. Read on to learn more about the progress we’re working to deliver for District 4 residents and our entire state.

As always, my office is always available to answer your questions and provide any assistance that you may need. Please do not hesitate to contact us or call my office at 517-373-7918 if you are in need of help.

In Solidarity,

Darrin Camilleri

State Senator

District 4

  • We will be continuing our fight to curb the intake of hazardous waste into our region and to lower the cost of medication by introducing a Prescription Drug Affordability Board.
  • Thank you to everyone who came out to our last Coffee Hour. If you have any questions or comments on legislation, community issues, or any matter that is important to you please feel free to reach out to my office here.
  • During the 50th anniversary of the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), my colleagues and I want to lift up how our game-changing expansion of Michigan’s EITC has impacted communities across the state, putting more money in the pockets of workers and families to better afford gas, groceries, child care and more. As we begin this new legislative session,
I’m excited to get to work and create meaningful change both across our state and in our Western Wayne and Downriver communities. I will be sure to keep you updated as we tackle issues that have a tangible impact on the lives of our neighbors. We will be continuing our fight to curb the intake of hazardous waste into our region and to lower the cost of medication by introducing a Prescription Drug Affordability Board.

Last week I was proud to join Congresswoman Debbie Dingell, Trenton Mayor Steve Rzeppa, and our friends at MDOT as proudly announced $73 million federal dollars that were awarded towards a grade separation project at Fort St. and Van Horn. Our Downriver neighbors know just how important this project is, as it will alleviate traffic delays and save lives by allowing our first responders to respond quickly to emergencies. This project
wouldn’t be possible without the $20 million that we fought for in last year’s state budget and I’m incredibly grateful for Congresswoman Dingell’s leadership to bring these funds back home.

I want to thank everyone who came to our Coffee and Conversation event with Representative Miller last Monday at the Belleville Area District Library.
We had a great conversation on hazardous waste, prescription drug affordability, and a number of other pertinent topics. I’m looking forward to our next in-district event, which we will have more information on in our next E-Newsletter.

EITC: Lowering Costs for Michiganders for 50 Years

For 50 years now, the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) has been instrumental in lifting families and workers out of poverty, reducing racial disparities, and providing critical support to small businesses and local economies.

Especially at a time when so many Michiganders are facing challenges affording the essentials, from gas to groceries, I’m proud to have worked with my Senate Democratic colleagues to pass policy that helps offset these prices and even allow some folks to save or pay off debts. I’m referring to when we quintupled Michigan’s match of the federal EITC from 6% to 30%, securing the largest increase to the credit in state history.

This game-changing expansion helps 700,000 Michiganders struggling to make ends meet save an average of $750 more per year, resulting in $3,150 in total savings with the federal and state EITCs combined. Here in District 4, over 18,500 families benefit, boosting incomes of working folks from $143 to over $700 on average. Our small businesses reap the benefits too, with over $13 million now being returned to our local economy.

But — Michiganders must make sure to claim the credit if they are eligible! To determine eligibility and find tax preparation resources, click here.
