CCL issues statement
on racial justice

As Americans continue to express public outrage over the murder of George Floyd and America’s pattern of injustice, Citizens’ Climate Lobby this week issued a statement of support for racial justice.

CCL Executive Director Mark Reynolds said, “It’s not enough simply to list diversity as one of our values. The best way we can proclaim that Black lives matter to CCL is for us to take concrete action.”

The “concrete action” Mark referred to is explained in a separate blog post, which suggests a number of things our white members can do to make CCL a more inclusive organization, such as:

As Mark said in the statement, “there is no simple fix for racism—but we will not shy away from doing our part in this vital work.”

Lobbying: Connecting online with congressman

Because of social distancing imposed by the pandemic, in-person meetings with members of Congress are not taking place. The Naperville CCL chapter, however, got a little face time with their congressman, Rep. Bill Foster (D-IL), when he dropped in on the group’s May meeting, which was held over Zoom. Foster, who is a scientist, told the group, “Every disaster movie starts with the government ignoring a scientist.” The group publicly thanked Foster for joining them in this tweet.

CCL volunteers are regularly activating the “five levers” of political will in their communities. If you’d like to learn more about how to pull the lobbying lever like these volunteers did, watch or read this training on planning and practicing a lobby meeting.
