John,

As we celebrate Black History Month this February, I’m reflecting on the many prominent Black Virginians and Americans who’ve made a mark on our Commonwealth and moved America forward. From trailblazing leaders to unsung heroes, the contributions of Black Virginians have shaped the course of our history and continue to inspire Virginians across generations.

We honor the legacy of figures like Dr. Dorothy Height, whose lifelong work in civil rights and social justice brought meaningful change to our society, and the late John Mercer Langston, one of the first Black Americans elected to public office in the United States. We also acknowledge the tireless efforts of leaders today, from educators to local elected officials, who continue to advocate for equality and progress. Despite all of our great progress, there is more to be done.

Throughout this month, we reflect on the profound impact of these individuals, whose work has not only enriched our Commonwealth but has also been integral to the broader movement for justice and opportunity in America.

As we recognize their contributions, we must also commit ourselves to the ongoing work of creating a more inclusive future for all. The fight for justice is far from over, but by standing together, we can build on the legacy of those who have come before us.

Let us celebrate Black History Month by honoring the past, recognizing the present, and working toward a brighter future for everyone.

Sincerely,

Abigail Spanberger
