John,

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is expected to announce charges on the remaining officers who stood by and watched George Floyd breathe his last breath. But that’s not even close to the change that’s needed in this moment.

The anguish of the last few days has made it clear to me that we can’t ever go “back to normal,” as so many people want to do after this crisis. Going back to normal means more suffering for Black people in America. It means more Breonna Taylors and George Floyds and Ahmaud Arberys.

That cannot happen. We can never return to an old normal where communities of color suffer racist violence, the worst effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the most painful economic carnage.

We are witnessing the deep pain of Black Americans and it should compel every one of us, of all backgrounds, to demand something better. That starts with justice for George Floyd and new legislation to rein in abuse by police officers across the country.

Then we have to dream MUCH bigger. We need to undo the damage of the last few months of crisis – and centuries of oppression – by building opportunities for Black, Brown, and low-income communities to live in a world that is #BetterThanBefore.

To do this, we will need to mobilize a multi-racial movement to demand something beautiful and new: an America with fewer racist murders, fewer people behind bars, better jobs, and cleaner skies. Can you help?

Right now, leaders in Congress, state capitals, and boardrooms across the country are struggling to respond to a devastating pandemic and waves of protests against injustice and oppression. Those plans must include the voices of people who suffer the most under the “old normal.” That’s where you come in.

Help us show that countless people refuse to go back to normal and are ready to do the hard work of dreaming up and building something better than before.

In the weeks to come, we will bring people together across racial and partisan lines to dream up and fight for an America that works for Black, Brown and low-income communities:

Justice: Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is expected to bring charges against the remaining officers involved in the murder of George Floyd. The officers who violated their oath to serve and protect communities by standing idly by as George Floyd was murdered must be brought to justice. We call for accountability and healing for George’s family and Minneapolis communities.

Legislation: We are mobilizing a national, diverse coalition of organizations and federal lawmakers to address systemic flaws in policing across America. We need legislative solutions that will hold police officers accountable, ensure taxpayer dollars are spent towards solutions that actually address public safety, and put an end to the massive racial disparities in police violence and abuses against Black and Brown communities.

Opportunity: We must keep building opportunities for Black and Brown communities to live, work, and thrive in a world that is #BetterThanBefore through our programs: Dream Corps #cut50, Dream Corps Green For All, and Dream Corps Tech.

Add your name today and we will call on you to dream big and make real change with us: [link removed]

We will build community and create opportunities to share your ideas, change public policy, connect with others, and support leaders and programs at the frontlines of change. Together, we can build a country with freedom and dignity for all.

Our political leaders have failed us, abandoning low-income communities and people of color who make up the base of both political parties. This failed politics produced the old normal of white supremacy, inequality, mass incarceration, the climate crisis, dead-end jobs and more. The pandemic has made all of this more visible and more volatile.

There is no going back to normal. The only question is whether we continue heading off the cliff, or work now to build something better.

This isn’t something we can do on our own. It will take leaders from every walk of life – leaders like you. Will you help?
