You’ve probably heard that over the last week, Donald Trump and DOGE have been putting much of their efforts into trying to shut down USAID. Here’s what that means, why it’s so bad for both the United States and the world, what I’m doing about it, and why I’m asking for your help.

Republicans are attacking USAID as part of an effort to end anything they see as “foreign aid.” That includes USAID’s work fighting pandemics, getting food to malnourished kids, and strengthening the growing economy.

But those things aren’t just good for folks overseas – they’re good for us here at home too. USAID contracts help support American farmers who provide food that then keeps kids alive. Pandemics stopped elsewhere don’t reach our shores, keeping us healthy. And USAID helps us counter foreign powers like China and Russia that are seeking to expand their global influence, and that have a habit of popping up in power vacuums.

Gutting USAID will cost thousands of Americans their jobs, weaken our position globally, and give China a massive giveaway. It’s the wrong move. So all week long I’ve stood with USAID workers, including on Wednesday at a rally against DOGE lawlessly shutting down federal agencies.

Late yesterday, a federal judge blocked the Trump administration from putting thousands of USAID workers on leave. But this is far from the end of the fight.
