President Trump is exploiting another crisis: using the suffering of those affected by the Los Angeles fires as a tool to push voter suppression.

He's threatening to withhold aid to the thousands of Southern Californians who’ve lost their homes, livelihoods, and communities to wildfire unless the state government sides with him to deny thousands of voters’ rights by passing a draconian voter ID law.1

Trump’s allies in Congress are falling in line, with House Speaker Mike Johnson refusing to help Americans in need if there isn’t something in it for his party. Congress must refuse to politicize disaster aid.

California lawmakers have already passed strong protections for the state’s voting systems to ensure they’re both accessible and secure. Adding voter ID into the mix would do nothing to secure elections, just shut thousands of eligible voters out on the basis of class and color.

Entire neighborhoods have been reduced to ash, families have been displaced, and critical infrastructure has been damaged. The road to recovery is long – and Trump’s attempt to condition relief will only make it longer.
