Touring the clean up progress at Palisades High with the US Army Corps of Engineers

Dear friends and partners,

Spring is here and the semester is in full swing! As the days get longer, our work continues to support the recovery efforts of our families and school communities affected by the Palisades fire ([link removed]) . I’m proud that last week, Palisades High School was able to announce plans to return to in-person learning at a temporary site in Santa Monica. I was also able to tour the sites of Pali High and our two damaged elementary schools with the Army Corps of Engineers to see firsthand the progress of debris removal so that we can begin the process of rebuilding on the District’s ambitious timeline ([link removed]) .

As these efforts continue, we are meeting with families, staff, and community members to engage on the short- and long-term plans for rebuilding and recovery. We also took a more in-depth look at the planning process at the latest meeting of my Facilities and Procurement meeting ([link removed]) . The goal of my committee is to examine District facilities, procurement processes, and projects to promote transparency, public awareness, and improved contracting standards—and I will continue to advocate for this progress as we modernize and upgrade campuses districtwide.

Onward,

Over the past few weeks, my team and I have been busy celebrating the groundbreaking of a new building at Pierce College, visiting Venice HS to see the cell phone ban in action, joining the AAPA "Bring Your Boss to Dinner" event, visiting students at Encino ES, Nestle ES, Kenter Canyon ES, and Brentwood Science Magnet, celebrating Read Across America at Tarzana ES, meeting with parent representatives from the Our Voice organization, touring the damaged Palisades campuses with the Army Corps, and meeting with the affected schools' families.

Congratulations to the The "Wobblegong" Shark team, Mark Twain Middle School’s Science Olympiads! They recently made history as the first LAUSD middle school to win 1st place in the Southern California Regional Science Olympiad Competition. Twain's program began in 2020, when 8th-grade science teacher Mr. Loren Scott enrolled in the Science Olympiad Urban Initiative, a partnership with The Aerospace Corporation to increase STEMM opportunities in Title 1 schools. After earning 7th place and a spot in the State competition last year, students spent their summer preparing, studying, and competing in several invitationals during the 2025 season to hone their skills. They now advance to the State Competition, where we will all be cheering them on!
