You may have seen us here at Fight for the Future raising alarm bells about online ID checks or “age verification” bills, a wave of laws mandating surveillance and censorship checkpoints that demand your driver’s license, passport, or even a face scan to access parts of the Internet lawmakers deem unsavory.¹

Now, fights around online ID checks are heating up in multiple states, and we’re ramping up our campaign to meet the moment. Under a new Trump admin keener than ever on surveilling people and stifling access to information, we can’t afford to let these bills become law.

Here are three quick ways to help:

1. Contact your lawmakers. Yep, it really makes a difference. If you haven’t yet signed the petition letting your reps know you oppose online ID checks, sign ASAP.
   

2. Share this new letter² from a broad coalition of 100 groups opposing online ID checks. Read and share with your friends, lawmakers, and on social media. Get schooled on why these bills don’t promote “child safety” and instead threaten us all.
   

3. Pitch in any amount to help us win this fight. As ID check bills move in Arizona, New Mexico, and more,³ our entire team is dedicating critical time to intervene—and that takes funds. From mobilizing national coalitions to building tools for local advocates to use in their fights to pulling flashy stunts to tip the scales on critical votes, we’ve got a lot up our sleeve. But we can’t meet this moment without your support.

We’re going all in on this fight because we know it’s crucial in the struggle against rising fascism, surveillance, and censorship. Imagine trying to read an article about queer and trans issues, access information about abortion care, or look up your local anti-Tesla protest and being met with a demand for your IP address or credit card. If you do hand your info over, you might see it leaked, hacked, or sold to police.^4,5 That’s the future threatened by this dangerous trend toward online age verification.
