** Higher education is failing. American universities are more expensive and less impressive than ever. Enrollments are falling, tuition is sky-high, and suffocating ideological rigidity is the norm on campus.

Why do so many students graduate with no life skills and mountains of debt? And why have universities been granted immunity from the demands, necessities, and realities of public life?

If any business in the marketplace produced as little, charged as much, and had become as profoundly distrusted as American universities today, then that business would cease to exist. So why are so many universities allowed to just … fail?

The task in front of us calls for unconventional solutions and "creative destruction."

That's why Independent Institute is so fiercely devoted to Sparking Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Our latest work in this area accomplishes just that with the new release of Let Colleges Fail: The Power of Creative Destruction in Higher Education ([link removed]) , by Senior Fellow Richard K. Vedder. In this new book, Vedder presents the concept of "creative destruction", used in the profit-sharing sector, as one of key solutions for the challenges plaguing higher education.

"Vedder argues persuasively that the only way for the U.S. to get back to affordable, high-quality education is to allow the invisible hand of the competitive market to work so that schools will succeed or fail based on their ability to satisfy students."
