As the D.C./DMV New Liberals chapter lead, I am asking CNL members across the country to help our nation’s capital.
The Continuing Resolution (CR) that Congress passed last Friday is forcing Washington D.C. to return to its 2024 spending levels, slashing local spending by more than $1 billion for FY2025. This drastic spending cut will weaken our Metro system, public school system, city services, and police.
For over 20 years, CRs passed by the federal government have included a provision, permitting D.C. to continue spending in accordance with the city budget, even if the federal government shuts down. This is critical to protect D.C.’s autonomy from the federal government and partisan influence. Now, House Republicans want to treat D.C. and its residents like a federal agency, despite the city being funded by local tax dollars, not federal funds.
In order to fix this oversight in the federal budget, the Senate unanimously passed S. 1077, a bill that would restore DC’s ability to spend at its 2025 budget levels. We need to ensure the House passes this bill when it’s back in session on March 24.
D.C. should have the freedom to allocate our own taxpayer dollars as it sees fit – not at the whim of Congress.
I am asking every New Liberal across the country to take a few minutes to send a letter to your Representative in support of D.C.’s autonomy. Use this form to make your voice heard!
Thank you for your support,
Karl Nielsen
