We've watched in recent weeks as the Trump administration has stripped protections from thousands of vulnerable people fleeing violence. We've seen him push to send ICE agents into schools and hospitals. We even saw him deport a 10-year-old US citizen recovering from brain cancer.
Homan seems perfectly comfortable tossing aside our rights in pursuit of retaliation against speech that Trump doesn’t like. But if he's so concerned about criminals running free, he should turn his attention to the convicted felon and repeat offender residing at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
We know the truth: tearing apart families and sowing fear and chaos in communities does nothing to ensure public safety or fix our broken immigration system.
Instead, I'll continue to fight for policies that actually keep us safe. That includes my New York for All Act, which would create a consistent, statewide standard requiring immigration authorities to obtain a judicial warrant before working with city or state agencies. If people feel comfortable interacting with local agencies like the police, they'll call for help when they need it, keeping us all safer.
Don't just take my word for it: law enforcement agencies themselves say they don’t want to do immigration enforcement, because it drives a wedge between police and communities, which undermines public safety. That’s why places across the US that have taken my approach have lower crime rates than those that don't.
Our state has always been a beacon of opportunity for those seeking a better life. I'll fight as hard as I can to ensure it stays that way.
