This email is a little longer than usual, but I hope you will take the time to read it. Because we have an important decision to make, and we have to make it now.
Democrats across the country are furious at what happened in Congress last week. So am I.
Last week I voted against the Republican government funding bill in the House. Was it because I wanted to shut the government down? Of course not. But that bill locks in much of the Trump/Musk strategy of taking a wrecking ball to our Constitution, the rule of law, and the needs of America’s working families.
Unfortunately, too many Democratic senators and their leadership folded like a cheap campstool.
Don’t get me wrong: I understand their fear that closing down the federal government comes with risk. But history teaches us the price when fear turns into surrender. I won’t be a part of that. If you agree that we can’t just roll over and play dead, I need your help. [[link removed]]

Here’s something else I won’t do: just complain about what Trump and Musk are doing. Wringing our hands isn’t a strategy. We need to fight back, and here’s what I think the rules should be:
Call Things What They Are – Too many people are acting like what’s happening is normal. It’s not. Trump, Musk and their Republican congressional enablers are attacking our Constitution, the rule of law and wrecking our government’s ability to keep us safe, healthy and provide for working people. They are breaking the law and sending very clear signals that when the courts tell them to stop, they may ignore them. The definition of a coup is the overthrow of a lawful government through illegal means. When they cross that red line, we should call it what it is.
Don’t Back Down – It’s true that Democrats don’t hold the presidency, the House or the Senate. But what’s most galling about what happened last week is that you cannot move forward in the Senate without Democratic support: it takes 60 votes. We are not helpless, and we should stop acting like we are. This Continuing Resolution expires in September, and we need Democratic leadership who will not allow us to get rolled again. Period.
Don’t Accept False Choices – Trump, Musk and congressional Republicans are essentially saying we should do something bad to avoid something worse. This is how bullies get their way, and we don’t have to play that game. But that requires offering a different, better choice, which means…
Don’t Forget Who This is Really About – America’s working families, the middle class and those who believe we should be a country that gives people the opportunity to succeed and give their children a better future. I have spent my entire public life fighting for working people. That fight is why I show up for work every day, and I will link arms with anyone who will do the same. That is the way we will take back our country.

I know that was a lot. But as Democrats, we need a clear vision of how we move forward, and we need it now. Our country is in danger, and I believe we have about 6 months to turn things around.
This is not the last you are going to hear from me. I’ll keep sharing with you specific ideas of what I believe we need to do. And with your support, I’ll keep pushing my colleagues to do what it takes to reset and retake the agenda.
