John,
I was humbled to see a great human rights advocate, Martin Luther
King Jr. III, come forward and endorse my proposals for police
and criminal justice reform in our country.
The painful truth is that there’s
no magic solution to resolving 400 years of racism in our
country. And even if there were, it wouldn’t take away the pain
of those Black Americans who have lost a father, or son, or
mother, or daughter, or sister, or brother, or friend. But there
are steps we can take at the federal level to bend the moral arc
of the universe closer to justice, and we cannot afford to wait
any longer.
That’s why I’m inviting you,
John, to read over my proposals. And if
you like what you see, I’d like you to become a citizen
co-sponsor of my legislation.

I remember six years ago standing
on the floor of the House of Representatives to honor Eric
Garner, and six years later here we are once again. America is
broken.
When Black people make up 13% of
the population but 60% of the COVID-19 deaths, America is broken.
When only 12% of Black and Latino
business owners who applied for PPP report receiving relief,
America is broken.
When we have armed vigilantes
attacking us in the streets and police stomping on our necks,
America is broken.
And I’m not pretending my
proposals will fix everything overnight, but the time of doing
nothing is over. The time of fighting for police
accountability and racial equality is right now.
So if you have time, will you
read over my proposals and if you agree with them, sign as a
citizen co-sponsor?

protests in the streets to online activism, it’s clear that
change is only going to come from the bottom up. Together, I know
we can build a better tomorrow.
In solidarity,
Hank
