Politics in a Nutshell
Iowa loses $11 million as Trump administration cuts funding for schools and food banks to buy from local farmers [[link removed]]
Trump and MAGA Republicans are coming for Iowa farmers yet again. First, it was the tariffs, now it’s through cuts to vital agricultural programs. Over eleven million dollars is being taken from programs (Local Food for School Program, Local Food for Child Care Program, and Local Food Purchasing Assistance Program) that buy produce and other food products from Iowa farms and give them to local food banks and schools. The money helps keep our rural economy afloat, and it keeps kids and their families from growing hungry. And now, thanks to Trump and the Republicans that serve him, it’s gone.
Tim Walz holds a town hall in an Iowa Republican's district [[link removed]]
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz visited Des Moines last Friday, the speaker at a town hall intended for the absent Representative Zach Nunn. He spoke on issues that Iowans want to ask Zach Nunn Nunn, but he and his Republican colleagues refuse to address; firings at the VA, tariffs hurting our economy, cuts coming to Medicaid. The IDP is thankful for the folks who stood up during the town hall and were willing to tell their own stories to Gov. Walz. It was important to hear frank talk about the problems our country and state are facing, and the solutions that can fix them, instead of silence from our Republican ‘leaders’.
Trump argues Biden's 'autopen' pardons won't stand [[link removed]]
In an effort to persecute his perceived political opponents, Trump recently claimed that Biden’s executive pardons were null and void because he used a machine called an autopen to sign them. An autopen records an individual’s signature; it’s then able to write that signature on a piece of paper at the push of a button. Its only purpose is to make signing documents faster. Many presidents have used them over the years. Trump obviously wants to punish his opponents, and the pardons prevent him from doing so, which means he needs a manufactured and silly justification to overturn the pardons.

Note From the Chair
Hey folks! Rita Hart here.
Trump has created more bad news for our already struggling farm economy. On his orders, the USDA has canceled several programs that buy produce and other foodstuffs from farmers so that they can be given to local schools and food banks.
This is a double-edged sword and will hurt both our farmers and the food-insecure families that rely on them. It’s yet another example of government ‘efficiency’ by Trump that just means cutting programs that benefit the needy to pay for a tax cut that will only benefit the wealthy.
Our government has been made more efficient for the millionaires and billionaires who will see one less zero on their taxes next year. It is up to us to show the people that the government isn’t working for us and what that means for our wallets.
Our work continues,
Sincerely,
Rita Hart
