LULAC Thanks Iowa Voters For Defeating Steve King
=================================================
Nation’s Oldest and Largest Latino Civil Rights Organization Says Election
Results Prove Voters Oppose Xenophobia and Racial Hate
Washington, DC - The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) issued the
following statement late Tuesday following the primary defeat of longtime
Republican Congressional Representative Steve King from Iowa’s 4th District :
Domingo Garcia - National President
“Iowa voters have spoken loud and clear and sent Congressman King packing after
twenty years in Washington. His constant anti-immigrant and racial remarks have
no place in our country today and other politicians who use Jose y Maria as
piñatas would do well to see where they will end up if they follow King’s
example. Any elected official who questions why white supremacy and white
nationalism are considered offensive or attempts to equate white supremacists
with peaceful protestors and says there are fine people on both sides clearly is
fanning the flames of racial bigotry and doesn’t belong in public office.
I am urging Iowa State Sen. Randy Feenstra (R) and Democractic candidate J.D.
Scholten to create a different type of campaign based on the issues rather than
divisive hate-based rhetoric. The people of Iowa’s 4th District deserve to have a
strong voice in Washington that speaks for everyone, including Latinos, Blacks,
Asians and Native Americans who live in northwestern Iowa. LULAC will monitor
this race very closely to make sure we don’t see a repeat of another Steve King
in Congress and we encourage everyone who can vote to do so in November.”
Nick Salazar - State Director - LULAC Iowa
“LULAC Iowa commends the voters of the 4th congressional district for exercising
their Constitutional right and voting out the hate and division. For many years
LULAC Iowa has challenged Steve King's hateful, divisive, and racist actions. We
fought against his Iowa English-only law, boycotted his campaign contributors,
called for his resignation, and condemned racist statement after racist
statement. We will continue to take a stand against hate and make sure the Latino
and immigrant voices of the 4th congressional district are heard at the ballot
box in November."
