** The Weekly Bird Word
------------------------------------------------------------
03/17/25

This week’s Bird Word is:
Altricial

According to the Cornell Lab Bird Academy ([link removed]) , altricial describes young birds that hatch undeveloped and in many cases naked or with sparse down; such helpless young require complete parental care, like the baby American Robins below
.

** More in local bird and nature news:
------------------------------------------------------------
* The frogs are peeping! Visit your local pond or wetland to listen and learn to identify their calls here ([link removed]) .
* Learn about Godwits. Tomorrow is our virtual program, 30,000 Miles in Search of Godwits ([link removed]) .
* Who do you want on your team? Birdathon ([link removed]) information is now back on our website. Start thinking about which of your friends would want to bird all day (or all morning) with you! Consider doing a Birdathon at Home to see the bird biodiversity that your yard supports. (Tip - plant more natives this Spring to attract more birds!)
* Don’t miss our Alliance Afternoon! Join us in person on March 23 to learn how to find and identify migrating spring warblers. The Volunteer Fair will be after our Alliance Afternoon speaker. Sign up here ([link removed]) .
* Mark your calendars for these upcoming native plant sales ([link removed]) . The birds will thank you.
* The nice weather is back! Give your thanks by pulling out invasives with Joan Haffey, Bill Browning and other friends. See times on our Stretch Our Parks page here ([link removed]) (scroll down to Upton Hill - Bluemont Park corridor). Volunteers are especially needed this Wednesday, March 19 at Lockwood/Elmwood Housing Complex in Arlington. Info and signup here ([link removed]) !
See you out there,
