John,

A little over one week ago, yet another Black man, George Floyd, was murdered at the hands of a police officer.

These kinds of encounters are all too familiar in America. He and countless other members of the Black community should not have died—and we WILL fight for accountability and justice from the men and the system which killed him. That starts with holding our police force accountable, as well as charging and convicting all four officers involved.

I mourn this loss and the recent ones that came before it: Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor.

I am angered that the reform that we so desperately need is either ignored or trivialized by members of Congress. The President’s words and actions directly resulted in police tear-gassing peaceful protestors for a photo op holding a bible at a church.

The Episcopal Bishop of Washington, Mariann E. Budde, who oversees that church said, “The president just used a Bible and one of the churches of my diocese as a backdrop for a message antithetical to the teachings of Jesus… I just can’t believe what my eyes are seeing.”

Over 50 years ago, President Lyndon Johnson created a commission to carefully study the riots, police brutality, and deaths of 1967. Tragically, the conclusions of the Kerner Commission still ring true today: “Our nation is moving toward two societies, one black, one white—separate and unequal." The Kerner Report laid out a series of broad-ranging, but specific, structural changes, ranging from real accountability for police officers, to major investments in housing and jobs, to making public education truly equal so that all have real opportunity, to name a few. We need those changes now.

We, as a nation, have not fulfilled our responsibility to end the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow. I promise you I will work every day to build a future where everyone has the opportunity to live and thrive. I will fight to end injustice and racism against African Americans and people of color—now.

Please take care of one another, and continue fighting. We are not done until we achieve a more just, equitable, sustainable, and prosperous future for ALL.

My best,

Diane
