It’s been hard to grapple with how little structural power Democrats have in Washington right now; Republicans have full control of the House, the Senate, and the White House. Democrats can’t force a vote on bills (like one to remove Musk from our government payment systems) or force Administration officials (like Secretary of State Marco Rubio) to get back to us (after I contacted his office pleading my case for the preservation of USAID).
But! Democrats are fighting back. In the unrelenting shock-and-awe dominance of the press, and the pace at which President Trump and Elon Musk are creating news, I understand why that’s not always breaking through. I’m speaking out on social media, on TV, in the traditional press, and in speeches on the floor of the House.
What else am I doing?
* I’m helping to recruit candidates who can help us take back the House and be a check on President Trump and his allies. It's working. www.politico.com/news/2025/02/25/recruit-federal-workers-run-for-office-022064
* I found Secretary Rubio in Munich at the Munich Security Conference and talked to him directly about the importance of USAID.
* I’m joining amicus brief (aka friend of the court) filings in support of cases filed against the Trump Administration.
* Behind the scenes (because doing so publicly will backfire), I’m urging my Republican colleagues to speak up. As one of the most bipartisan members of Congress, I know I have their ear. My bullhorn is smaller than Trump's or Musk’s but it’s not nothing.
* I cosponsored the Taxpayer Data Protection Act (to force Musk out of our systems) and have called on Treasury Secretary Bessent to explain and justify Musk’s behavior.
This feels like a David and Goliath moment. While this fight is going to be longer than that one, I like our odds. Thank you for supporting our work.
