Hi John,

I hope you saw my last email and took action to protect our wildlife and public safety! I'm reaching out to make a clarification on my past email. HB 2978 will not provide funding itself for wildlife crossings, as it is a policy bill only, but it will pave the way for wildlife crossing funding to be included in SB 5541, ODOT's budget bill.

If you haven't already, there's still time to take action in support of HB 2978!

Take action now

Please reach out if you have any questions.

Dear John,

We’re lucky to live in a state full of wildlife. Yet, in the age of vehicles and roadways, our wildlife is at a great risk of vehicle collisions. Each year in Oregon there are over 7,000 wildlife-vehicle collisions reported, although the actual number of these collisions is likely much higher, as half or two-thirds of large mammal collisions go unreported. It’s time to make changes to protect our wildlife and for the safety of our public. Tell your representatives to support wildlife crossings!

Take action

On Monday, March 17th, the House will vote on HB 2978, a bill that would minimize transportation impacts on wildlife through wildlife crossings, collaboration with Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), training programs for staff, and resource sharing with agencies, Tribes, NGOs, academic Institutions & other community partners statewide.

HB 2978 would lead to decreased collisions, and in turn, decreased costs, as seen with U.S. 97’s wildlife crossings. ODFW expects these crossings on U.S. 97 to pay for themselves in just 10 to 12 years. Imagine what we could do if we passed HB 2978.

Our wildlife deserves our protection and consideration in transportation designs, not only for their livelihood, but also for the deaths and hundreds of serious injuries that we face from these dangerous collisions. Let’s save the lives of thousands — both wildlife and people — each year by passing HB 2978!

Will you tell your representatives now to vote YES on HB 2978 before the vote on Monday the 17th? Now is our chance to secure funding for this necessary program for our wildlife, transportation, and public safety!

Send the message now!

Together,

Eliza Walton (she/they)
