The Trump administration deported about 250 people who it says are members of Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan prison gang, to El Salvador this weekend, defying a federal judge's court order to halt the operation. It was not immediately clear if the deportations happened before or after a federal judge in DC on Saturday issued an emergency order demanding the president stop using wartime powers to immediately deport people, and turn around any planes already in the air. Senior Justice Department officials argued that the order came too late to stop the deportations, as planes were already (and conveniently) outside US territory. Trump invoked the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 against Tren de Aragua on Saturday. The seldom-used law gives the president authority to detain or deport nationals of an enemy nation during wartime or invasion. It's the first time the act has been used since World War II. Folks, if Donald Trump can simply defy federal court orders with impunity and deny due process to whomever he chooses, he won't just catch gang members and other "bad guys" in that very large net of his. We are truly entering uncharted territory, and our courts must hold.

A Hmong American woman — who is a mother of five — has been deported from the Milwaukee area to Laos, a country she has never set foot in, according to a new report. Ma Yang, 37, is being held in a rooming house in Laos, surrounded by military guards, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. She does not speak the language, knows no one, and says the military is holding all of her documents. The 37-year-old is also without insulin for her diabetes and is running out of her medication for high blood pressure. Yang was born in Thailand and was a legal permanent US resident until she pleaded guilty to marijuana-related charges and served more than two years in prison. She took the plea deal after her attorney incorrectly stated it wouldn’t affect her legal permanent residency, which was later revoked, the Journal Sentinel reports. "The United States sent me back to die," Yang told the outlet. "I don't even know where to go. I don't even know what to do."

Brown University professor deported despite valid visa and judge's order
US immigration authorities deported Brown University medical professor Dr. Rasha Alawieh despite her valid visa AND a judge’s order halting her removal. Alawieh, a Lebanese citizen and kidney transplant specialist, was detained at Boston’s Logan International Airport on Thursday while returning from a trip to visit her parents in Lebanon, according to a court complaint filed by her cousin Yara Chehab. Though federal Judge Leo T. Sorokin issued a Friday night order directing the government to give courts 48 hours notice before deporting Alawieh, she was still placed on a flight to Paris, where she was again detained on Saturday. Sorokin filed a second order yesterday, stating there was ground to believe authorities had "willfully" disobeyed his initial order, and he asked the government to respond to the "serious allegations" by Monday. Alawieh was issued a valid H-1B visa earlier this month after applying with the sponsorship of her employer, Brown Medicine. Welcome to Trump's America™, folks.
