When I was asked to give the Democratic response to President Trump’s speech, I knew that I wanted to highlight a place in Michigan where voters made their voices heard in the last election.

I chose Wyandotte, Michigan.

It’s a working-class town just south of Detroit. President Trump and I both won there in November. After I gave the speech, a local news station interviewed people in Wyandotte to ask them how they’re feeling about the state of politics today. I was glad to see that one resident thought it was “kinda cool” that we highlighted their town.

Here are a few of their impressions:

On the economy: "I'm not seeing inflation rolling back as what was promised. Certainly, my prices continue to go up constantly, and now I just was informed the fish that we get from Canada, the oysters we get from Canada, they're all gonna have tariffs on them. So either I am going to have to stop carrying or raise my prices.”
On dynamics in Washington: “I just cannot stand that they don't work together."
On tariffs: "I work in the automotive industry, and that's going to be a huge impact for us, and it's gonna be difficult to withstand, and I imagine that's gonna impact our jobs too. Nervous for my kids. This isn’t the future I imagined for them, but I’m still hopeful.”
It might not seem like it, but plenty of places like this still exist all across the United States – places where people believe that if you work hard, and play by the rules, you should do well and your kids should do better.

It’s up to all of us in elected office to make that a reality. You have my word that I’ll work with anyone I can to make life better for Michiganders from Wyanotte to Grand Rapids, Petoskey to Jackson.
