Dear John,

New Zealand and India have officially kicked off negotiations for a Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This is a huge step forward in strengthening our economic partnership with India.

Here’s why this matters:

India is the fifth-largest economy in the world with 1.4 billion people, presenting a massive opportunity for New Zealand exporters. Completing an FTA with India will help us achieve our goal of doubling exports in the next ten years. That means more jobs, higher incomes, and a reduced cost of living for Kiwi families.

This progress comes after months of hard work. Since taking office, our Government has made it clear that building a closer economic relationship with India was a top priority. Last year I had a great meeting with Prime Minister Modi, and Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay has travelled to India five times since we formed Government.  All of this effort is now starting to pay off, and we’re seeing real momentum.

But it’s not just about trade. We know that trade and investment go hand in hand. Trade supports one in four Kiwi jobs, and last year, exports contributed $100 billion to our economy. Securing new trade agreements and upgrading existing ones will ensure more job opportunities, higher wages, and more access to world-class public services for everyone.

At the same time, we’re committed to strengthening our ties with India in all areas – politics, defence, security, sport, and, of course, people-to-people connections. The 300,000 Indian Kiwis who call New Zealand home have played a huge role in shaping our country, not just economically but socially and culturally too. They’ve helped make New Zealand the diverse and vibrant nation it is today.

Our focus is clear - grow the economy, create more jobs, lift wages, and reduce the cost of living. The India FTA is a big part of this plan. I’m confident these negotiations will deliver real benefits for businesses, workers, and families in both countries.

Negotiations officially begin next month, and I’m excited to see where this partnership takes us.

Thank you,
Christopher
