[1]U.S. Senator Chris Murphy

There’s a lot happening right now. It’s hard for any of us to keep track, so I want to attempt to tie it together and explain what is really going on.

Donald Trump and Elon Musk are trying to flood the zone with crisis and chaos to distract from the real story of what’s happening.

Just try to take an inventory of everything that’s happened: Acquiring Greenland or Canada or the Panama Canal, ending birthright citizenship, occupying Gaza, shutting down USAID, tariffs and a fake trade war, TikTok, attacks on Trans kids, and probably dozens more you can think of.

The chaos and crisis is the point. So much of what he is doing is blatantly illegal or incredibly detached from reality. They know that, but they also know it’s an effective smokescreen for the real story. It is meant to distract the media and stop Democrats and the public from effective, unified opposition.

Now don’t get me wrong. He does believe in everything he’s saying and doing. He remains a bigoted bully that wants to divide us.

But Trump wants us to talk about the craziest ideas all day to relieve the pressure on him that is building as the public figures out that a theft is occurring — the billionaires illegally taking over government to steal from us.

We need to pay attention to the things that really matter. Pay attention to the things that matter and understand the story.

That story is about the wholesale transfer of power and wealth from average people to billionaires. It’s about the destruction of democratic norms that might be irreversible if not abated in the next few weeks or months.

Donald Trump and Elon Musk are trying to seize total control of government to punish enemies, reward friends, quash dissent and get away with a tax cut for their billionaire and corporate friends.

If Elon Musk has control over the payment system, then why should we assume he won’t turn on money to people he likes or is affiliated with and turn off money to his competitors and rivals?

That’s why you don’t allow someone with massive financial interests to be in charge of the Treasury’s payments systems. It’s fundamental corruption.

This is why the firing of the inspectors general mattered. If we had their oversight, then we might know what’s happening and how access to these systems is being used. Are they really using it to cut waste and fraud or more likely for their own corrupt gains?

We are weaker today than we were when the week started. China and Russia see that and are cheering for Elon Musk.

Part of the goal is to make you feel powerless, to make you think no amount of pressure will work, to convince you that democracy is over and you should give up.

But the people get to decide how we defend the United States — not Elon Musk. And if we keep focused and build mass public opposition, we can stop this crisis.

That is what I am trying to do, and when I head back to Washington this week, you can bet I’ll be laser-focused on these efforts. I’m humbled by how many people have supported me this past week, but we cannot afford to let the pressure off. So I am asking you to continue having my back.

Please make a contribution today to support my efforts to stop Trump and Musk’s Constitutional Crisis. Grassroots support is what allows me to focus all my time right now on the work you elected me to do — without fear of how Republicans’ corporate and billionaire friends may respond.

Donald Trump wants to convince you he is some all-powerful king. That’s all he’s ever wanted, but don’t let him. The moment people start believing that the easier it is for him to make it a reality.

This is a democracy. The power comes from the people, and if we collectively exercise it, then we can preserve our democracy, the greatest experiment in human history.

Every best wish,

Chris Murphy
