Dear John,

It’s hard to know where to begin. Do we begin with the administration’s brazen act to dismantle USAID and shut down foreign aid? Or perhaps with its attempt to freeze federal spending writ large? Maybe we start with their hollow efforts to fight antisemitism with an Executive Order that does nothing to protect American Jews, and instead attacks our First Amendment rights.

No. While each of those irresponsible acts deserves condemnation, I have to start by addressing the immoral and illegal announcement made by President Trump on Tuesday, with a smirking Prime Minister Netanyahu by his side, that Gazans should be removed to other countries and that the US should take over Gaza.

There is a name for the forced displacement of a civilian population. It is ethnic cleansing, and it is a war crime. Anyone who soft-sells this, anyone who “supports the President’s efforts,” anyone who refuses to acknowledge the clearly illegal nature of this is on the wrong side of history.

A Palestinian man kneeling in the ruins of his destroyed home. Gazan refugees must be given the chance to return home and rebuild.

There are a lot of things happening and a lot of questions being asked that I don’t have clear answers to. But I know this: our job at New Jewish Narrative is to be the xxxxxx against this tide of illegal and immoral activity. Our job is to push our elected leaders, over and over again if need be, to speak up and to take action. Our job is to be a voice in the Jewish community that says loudly and clearly, not in our name!

New Jewish Narrative is today’s progressive voice on what’s required to forge a path to a safer, more peaceful, and better future for Israelis and Palestinians.  We demand an end to the war and a return of all the hostages. We call out the Occupation at every step. We stand for peace. We stand for justice. And we stand together as we raise our voices calling on our Jewish community colleagues and our elected officials to take action.

And we are doing so both in Washington and in Jewish communal spaces across the country. At institutional tables with our colleagues and at public events with our activists, we make it clear that the American Jewish community opposes war-mongering, the suppression of free speech, or attacks on democracy, whether here in the US or in Israel. We say no to annexation. We say no to ethnic cleansing. And we say no to those who claim to support them in the name of American Jews.

On Tuesday (February 4th), we stood with our community to demand an end to the war and the return of all remaining hostages. We are determined to make our voices heard. Pictured speaking here: former hostage Ilana Gritzewsky.

We say yes to speaking out, to protesting, to a ceasefire and diplomacy. We say yes to finding our way back to an Israel that is representative of all its people and to walking the path to a better and more peaceful future.

And we say yes to the strong, progressive segment of our own population that stands with us on these matters of security, principle and morality.

We are grateful to be in this work together with you. You are our partners in this enormous effort. At New Jewish Narrative, we are writing a story for a new day, one of activism, connection and a commitment to peace, security and justice that represents our core values.

Please make a gift to New Jewish Narrative today. Join us in writing the story of our future. Together, we will fight the tsunami of extremism on both sides of the ocean. Together, we will keep fighting for justice, day in and day out.

Thank you for your generous support and your commitment to fighting the battles ahead.

B’shalom,
